Ghana Carnival Parade Project

Accra Press Conference announcement

“Carnival comes home”

2012 is the year that ‘Ghana’ will resonate across the world. This year will see international celebrations for the 55th year of Independence on 6th March, with cultural performances and dances already planned for Accra, London, New York and Bremen; the commonwealth celebrations with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee; and the 20th anniversary of PANAFEST in July and August.

To make this year a year for all Ghanaian communities to participate, the Government and the Ministry of Tourism  have joined with the UK Centre for Carnival Arts in Luton, UK, The Ghana Society in the UK and Ghana Miss Tourism, the UK’s only Ghanaian carnival troupe, to create a large scale carnival parade for Accra in September 2012. This new partnership will seek to enhance tourism in Ghana through community celebration and putting Accra on the map for carnival.

The theme for the carnival will focus on ‘coming back home’, designed to stimulate tourism from the wider Diaspora, with the long term aim of making carnival a sustainable annual endeavour.

Spearheaded by Paul Anderson MBE CEO of UK Centre for Carnival Arts in partnership with the Ghana Society UK, Ghana Miss Tourism, the project will start with a press conference held on 2ndApril 2012, 14.00 at Afrikiko Spot in Accra.  The press conference will unveil the artistic carnival plans that will seek to be reflective of Ghanaian traditional values and character.

Ghanaian CEO of UK Centre for Carnival Arts, Paul Anderson MBE says, “the UK Centre for Carnival Arts is proud to be bringing the values and community spirit of carnival back to Ghana.”

He added: “Carnival as a reputable international tourism offer stimulating economic growth, developing sustainable employment opportunities and transforming lives is already well established in the Caribbean, Latin America and other parts of Africa. Therefore bringing carnival to Ghana as a significant annual event is both timely and well placed.”

Minister for Tourism, Hon. Akua Dansua said, “We are delighted to work with the UK Centre for Carnival Arts to enhance tourism in Accra that will reflect Ghanaian culture so vibrantly. We all need to get behind the project to ensure its success. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our local community in Accra to work with international experts in carnival.”

President of The Ghana Society UK, Maria Lovell said, “The Ghana Society UK showcases Ghanaian culture and traditions each year at Luton’s International Carnival. This is an opportunity to fuse our experiences here with other values and genres carnival and to celebrate this back home in Ghana. Carnival has the opportunity to be a national event, bringing everyone together in a colourful and rich celebration of Ghanaian culture through costume, music and dance.”

The carnival planned for 29th September 2012 seeks to bring together 1,000 school children, young adults and aspiring performers from the different communities across Accra to learn how to make carnival costume, music and dance.  International artists, recruited by UK Centre for Carnival Arts, will provide expert guidance and support to help Ghanaian artists create a national carnival parade, achieving a high profile event, designed and performed by local people, with the potential to draw in future visitors and investment into the Capital city.

Through this project, the partnership is seeking support from sponsors, investors and creative partners to explore a sustainable future for a national carnival event that can contribute immensely to Ghana’s tourism through community celebration.
